The NITF Technical Board oversees four types of TREs; these four are identified as such:

  • Controlled - TREs essential to product functionality at the enterprise level (e.g. data discovery, dissemination, exploitation, etc.). Configuration management overseen by NTB.

  • Registered - TREs serving program specific purposes with no significance to the product's functionality at the enterprise level. Configuration management overseen by producer.

  • Reserved - TREs under development, controlled or registered to be determined upon NTB review.

  • Observed - TREs observed in use with no knowledge and/or specification on its functionality.

The Pixel Metrics (PIXMTA) TRE contains data elements to describe quantitatively quality information encoded within a NITF2.1, NSIF1.0, or NSIF1.01-formatted Image Segment that has a corresponding Image Category (ICAT) field set to the value of “PXMETRIC”. The PIXMTA TRE associates the pixel metric data image to the collected source image data itself using the display level parameter of the Image Segment Subheader. If the associated source image is split into multiple Image Segments, then the pixel metric image must also be split into the same number of Image Segments at the same boundaries as the associated image, taking into account that the pixel metric data may be at a lower resolution than the associated source image. When extracting or calculating the pixel metric data for a specific pixel in the associated source image, the data consumer should use data from all of the Pixel Metric Image Segments when appropriate (e.g., interpolating across the boundary between segments). The PIXMTA TRE is a BIIF-compliant TRE. Initial Submission. The Exploitation Usability (USE26B) TRE is used with certain NTM imagery. This TRE is based upon the USE26A TRE found in Table 5-10 of STDI-0001, but expands the amount of information contained in the TRE to allow for additional information storage. The USE26B TRE is a BIIF-compliant TRE. The specific structure and field-level definitions of the USE26B TRE will be supplied to the NTB Chairman at a future date through the proper security channels.
